Anthony Baptiste believes that with hard work, dreams can come true. Now, standing on the threshold of opportunity, he hopes that he will have the support of others to make his dreams a reality. The former St Dominic's Children's Home and graduate of the Diploma in Digital Media Studies Animation programme at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) is one of only 15 international applicants accepted to attend the prestigious Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Winnipeg, Canada, one of the best in the field of animation. Tonight, Baptiste's work will be featured at a fund-raising event at Medulla Gallery on Fitt Street in Woodbrook, Two of Baptiste's films, including The Short Cut, will be screened at the art gallery and limited prints of his work will be auctioned.
Patrons are also welcome to make financial contributions to his tuition fund. The event is being supported by Medulla Gallery, fashion designer Meiling, and the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival.
Baptiste is also being assisted by his former UTT lecture, artist Mario Lewis, whom he credits with helping him prepare his portfolio for his Sheridan application. Baptiste says St Dominic's taught him how to be a gentleman, to believe in his dreams, as well as the importance of getting an education. He said the institution also instilled in him the desire to give back to society. As such, he wants to share his message of perseverance and self-belief with at-risk youth. This evening's event starts at 6 pm.
