T&T’s Makeda Bain secured the Girls Under-14 singles and doubles titles when the Barbados International Juniors COTECC Tennis G2 Tournament ended in Wildey, Barbados, on Thursday.
In the singles final, Bain defeated St Kitts/Nevis’ Shrey Rawat 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 and later paired with compatriot Suri Ramcharan to beat Rawat and Honduran Valentina Noe Mendoza in the doubles final by walkover.
The third-ranked Bain began the main draw with a bye before she eased past France’s Irene Mallet-Pinsolle 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and second-ranked Canada’s Katelyn Pasula 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Bain and Ramcharn reached the doubles final after beating the third-ranked French pair Rachel Aly and Mallet-Pinsolle 6-1, 7-5 after they overcame St Kitts/Nevis’ Briella Lake and Barbadian Sienna-Mai Lopez 6-1, 6-0 in the last eight.
The other T&T girls in the draw, Anya Roberts and Suri Ramcharan, went out at the first hurdle, losing to Grenada’s Eden John 1-6, 1-6 and Great Britain’s Antonio Williams 4-6, 6-7(7), respectively.
And in the second draw, T&T’s Teijha Wellington beat Antigua and Barbuda’s Zahra McKinnon 4-1, 4-1, after which she stunned top-ranked Honduran Valerio Kattan 5-4(5), 4-0 in the semis and then battled past second-ranked Sienna-Mai Lopez of Barbados 4-2, 4-1 in the final.
And in the Under-14 Boys’ doubles decider, France’s Vadim Aussepe Vinette and T&T’s Ryan Steuart lifted the title via their win over Justin Duncan of T&T and St Kitts/Nevis’ T’Zuriel Percival 6-2, 8-1.
Duncan and Percival won their quarterfinal against Guatemalan Nicolas Rodriguez and Honduran Fernando Kattan by walkover and then battled past top-seeded Barbadian Liam Cave and St Vincent’s Ethan Kent 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 in the semifinals.
And Vinette and Steuart won against T&T’s Eli Paty and Portugal’s Antonio Pimenta 6-1, 6-2 in their quarterfinal.
In the Boys Under-14 Singles Main Draw, T&T’s Nicholas McLetchie beat Honduran Fernando Kattan 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 11-9 before losing to Vinette 0-6, 0-6; Justin Duncan fell to St Vincent’s Ethan Kent 1-6, 1-6; Eli Paty beat Harrison Hadeed 6-0, 6-0 before he was stopped by Paulo Alvarez of Honduras, 4-6, 3-6; and Barbadian Cruz Thornton dumped T&T’s Michael Hamel-Smith 6-4, 6-2 in their opener.
And in the second draw, Steuart was a semifinalist, losing to Portugal’s Antonio Pimenta 0-4, 1-4, while Malik Bain was ousted in the quarterfinals, 2-4, 5-3, 9-11, by Barbadian Caleb Wilson, and Tedros Charles went out to Antigua and Barbuda’s Zayden Pelle 3-5, 0-4.
And in the Under-12 Boys’ singles final, Holden Hadeed defeated fellow T&T player Austin Ward 2-4, 5-4, and 10-5 in their tournament decider, while Lucca Gaston Johnston was the runner-up in the Girls’ Under-12 Division B consolation but also collected the ‘Sportsmanship Award’.
